Sustainability Consultant Firms in the UK: How to Choose

There are over 890 sustainability consulting firms in the UK. The number is growing. The challenge for most businesses is not finding a consultant. It is knowing which one to trust with work that directly affects whether they keep contracts and win tenders.

Here is how the market breaks down and what to look for when you are choosing.

The Big 4 and management consultancies

KPMG, EY, Deloitte, PwC, McKinsey, BCG, Accenture. They all have sustainability practices. They work with FTSE 100 companies on strategy, reporting, and large-scale transformation programmes. Their projects are priced for the enterprise market and tend to be out of reach for most SMEs.

If you are reading this article, they are probably not the right fit. They do excellent work at the enterprise level, but their economics do not scale down to mid-market businesses or SMEs. That is not a criticism. It is just how their model works. High-value, low-volume engagements with large corporations.

What they do create, however, is demand. When a Big 4 firm advises a FTSE 100 company to set Scope 3 targets and require supplier ESG compliance, the suppliers in that chain suddenly need help too. The Big 4 create the requirements. Smaller consultancies help suppliers meet them.

Platform providers

EcoVadis, Sedex, CDP, Supplier.io, Manufacture 2030. These are not consultancies. They are technology platforms that assess, score, or track sustainability performance. Your customer might require you to be on one of them.

The important distinction: platforms score you. They do not help you improve. If your EcoVadis score comes back as Bronze and your customer wants Silver, the platform will not send someone to help you close the gap. That is where consultancy comes in.

Some platforms work with consulting firms who help suppliers improve their scores. If you need help with a specific platform, look for a consultant with hands-on experience of it. Ltt Group helps suppliers prepare for EcoVadis assessments.

SME-focused consultancies

This is the largest and most varied category. Hundreds of firms serving individual businesses on carbon reporting, EcoVadis preparation, B Corp certification, policy development, and general ESG strategy. Pricing depends on scope and complexity, with project costs varying significantly between a focused carbon baseline and a full B Corp certification programme.

Quality varies enormously. Some firms have deep sector expertise, established methodologies, and track records of delivering results. Others are individuals who completed an IEMA course last year and set up a website. The barrier to entry is low, which is good for competition but makes it harder for buyers to assess quality.

What to look for when choosing

Sector experience matters more than general credentials. A consultant who has worked with construction supply chains will understand PPN 06/21, PAS 2080, and SCSS requirements without you having to explain them. A consultant who has worked in food and hospitality will know EcoVadis inside out because it is the dominant platform in that sector. Ask for examples of work with businesses like yours.

Fixed pricing is a strong indicator of experience. Consultants who have done the work enough times know what it costs. Those who insist on hourly billing with an open-ended scope are either inexperienced or prefer the flexibility of letting costs accumulate. Get a fixed price for a defined deliverable.

Ask what you get at the end. A 50-page strategy document is not the same as a carbon baseline you can put in a tender. A gap analysis is not the same as a completed EcoVadis submission. Be specific about what you need and make sure the consultant is specific about what they will deliver.

Check their own sustainability credentials. A sustainability consultant who cannot demonstrate their own commitments (SME Climate Hub membership, Anti-Greenwash Charter) should raise questions. At Ltt Group, we are a certified signatory of the Anti-Greenwash Charter and an SME Climate Hub member.

Where Ltt Group fits

We cover a space most consultancies do not. We work with corporates to improve supply chain sustainability performance, and with SMEs to help them respond to the requirements those corporates are setting. One team, both sides of the conversation.

Our Virtual Impact Team offers fixed-price specialist support. We also have exclusive access to Vizibli, an AI-powered carbon measurement platform, and we work with Investors in Community for verified social value evidence. That combination of consultancy, technology, and recruitment under one roof is not something we have found anywhere else in the UK market.
