What Is a Sustainability Consultant?

A sustainability consultant is an external specialist who helps businesses deal with environmental, social, and governance requirements. They exist because most businesses do not have this expertise internally, and the requirements have grown faster than most companies can hire for.

Five years ago, sustainability consultants mostly worked with large corporates on voluntary commitments. Today, they work across every sector, with businesses of every size, on requirements that are increasingly mandatory.

Why the role exists

The short answer is regulation and procurement. CSRD requires companies to report on their entire value chain. The UK is introducing its own Sustainability Reporting Standards. PPN 06/21 excludes companies without Carbon Reduction Plans from government contracts. The Procurement Act 2023 makes social value a mandatory evaluation criterion.

These regulations create demand. Companies need carbon data, policies, evidence packs, and tender responses they have never had to produce before. Most do not have anyone internally who can do this work. So they hire a consultant.

The other driver is customer pressure. Large companies are setting sustainability requirements for their supply chains. When your biggest customer sends you an ESG questionnaire and says your approved supplier status depends on the response, you need help fast. That is when most SMEs first contact a sustainability consultant.

How the market is structured

There are over 890 sustainability consulting firms in the UK. They range from solo practitioners working from home to Big 4 firms with dedicated sustainability practices working on enterprise-scale projects.

The Big 4 (KPMG, EY, Deloitte, PwC) and management consultancies (McKinsey, BCG) work with large enterprises on strategy and transformation. They do not serve SMEs. Their minimum project costs make it impossible.

Platform providers like EcoVadis, Sedex, and CDP are not consultancies. They are assessment tools. Your customer might require you to be on their platform, but the platform scores you. It does not help you improve.

SME-focused consultancies are the largest category. Pricing varies depending on scope and seniority. Quality varies too. Some are excellent. Some are individuals with a LinkedIn profile and limited practical experience. The challenge for most businesses is knowing which one to trust.

When you need one

You probably need a sustainability consultant if a customer has asked for carbon data or ESG evidence you cannot produce, you are losing tenders because of sustainability scoring, you have been asked to complete an EcoVadis assessment, you need a Carbon Reduction Plan for PPN 06/21, or your board has committed to targets but nobody knows how to deliver them.

You probably do not need one yet if sustainability has not come up in any customer conversations, your sector has minimal regulatory requirements, and your competitors are not being asked for ESG data either. But that window is closing. The direction across every sector is towards more requirements, not fewer.

What to look for

Sector experience is more important than general credentials. A consultant who has worked with construction supply chains will produce better results for a construction supplier than a generalist. Ask for relevant examples.

Fixed pricing is a good sign. If someone cannot tell you what a carbon baseline will cost before they start, they either do not understand the scope or they plan to let the hours accumulate. Transparent pricing means they have done this before.

Ask about output. "We will give you a sustainability strategy" is vague. "We will calculate your Scope 1 and 2 baseline, draft a Carbon Reduction Plan, and prepare responses for your top three customer questionnaires" is specific. Buy deliverables, not time.
